Year One Maths Morning

Year One and their parents enjoyed a morning of practical maths using Numicon!

Mr Taylor, Head of Junior School Maths, addressed the parents on our main aims in the teaching and learning of Maths. He showed how we develop Maths fluency by working on the concrete, pictorial and finally the abstract. Children were accompanied by parents and put through their mathematical paces covering the areas as outlined by Mr Taylor.

Children visited six Maths stations laid out in the hall. It was great to see the children showing their parents how to represent numbers in Numicon, use it to add up and subtract, make equivalence and apply their knowledge by working on number stories. Making pictures of animals in the Numicon was a popular station, tying Maths in well with our Topic work.

There was the buzz of excitement and learning in the hall. Brains were engaged and problems were solved. The children’s ability to read and understand the number stories they chose to solve was phenomenal and their perseverance to try different ways to solve the story. Maths language was at the top of the agenda with girls explaining how and why they chose their methods to solve the objectives presented to them.

Well Done Year One and many thanks to all our parents for your support and your commitment, taking time out of your busy working days to learn and enjoy watching your daughters at work in Maths.
