The Young Imagineers Competition

Along with 1,200 fellow young inventors, Aheli Roy (Year 6), entered her invention into the prestigious ‘Young Imagineers’ national competition.

Sponsored by the multinational energy company, Equinor, ‘Young Imagineers’ is part of Equinor’s ‘Heroes of Tomorrow’ programme which aims to inspire young people to engage in fun, relevant and rewarding science experiences.

Aheli’s ingenious invention – the ‘Fit Stick’ – combines a fitness tracker, telephone and walking stick in one smart product. Designed for people with limited mobility who do want to exercise, this unique stick displays the number of calories being burnt and how far the user has travelled. Equipped with an inbuilt flexible phone; a voice-activated calendar, which can store dates, and a rapid charger – the device can be fully charged in just ten minutes.

The ‘Young Imagineers’ judges were so impressed with young Aheli’s invention, they invited her to become one of the top 10 finalists and to present her concept at the Science Museum in London on Saturday 24 November 2018.

Aheli joined fellow finalists who had travelled from across the country to present her idea to the following eminent panel of judges:-
• BBC Breakfast presenter Steph McGovern
• The Gadget Show presenter, Dallas Campell
• Digital entrepreneur and science and technology enthusiast, Lopa Patel
• Research scientist and author of Secrets of Superhero Science, Barry Fitzgerald
• Jill Tully from Enquinor Energy Ventures

Sadly, Aheli did not win the first prize, but is very much a true winner to both her family and to everyone at Northwood College. Having presented confidently, articulately and professionally, Aheli, thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

“I am so very proud of Aheli – this accolade is a true testament to her dedication to science, creativity and innovation; and she showed great courage presenting to such a distinguished panel
of judges.” commented Mrs Hubble.

“Our young women embrace science and technology as it is an area that many will go on to focus on in their future careers. Very well done Aheli, keep up the excellent work.”
