Author and Activist Sinéad Burke Visits NWC

On Tuesday 30th January, pupils and staff were delighted to welcome the author, activist, and founder of accessibility and inclusion consultancy Tilting the Lens, Sinéad Burke.

After borrowing Sinéad’s book, Break the Mould, from the library, Junior School students were inspired to organise a number of Break the Mould themed initiatives in school. Having designed a ‘Break the Mould-Northwood College’ logo, the girls made pin-badges to encourage their peers to follow the philosophy Sinéad sets out in her book. Supported by Mrs Halliday, the girls launched ‘Break the Mould Week’. Students planned how to become future Mould Breakers and conquer challenges, by brainstorming and using vision boards, and to conclude the week they led a themed Assembly.

A very proud Mrs Halliday, shared the girls’ work with Sinéad, who wanted to meet the Northwood Mould Breakers and arranged to visit the school, host a JS Assembly, and a Q&A session.

Sinéad closed her inspirational Assembly saying: “Thank you for this important and wonderful day. Everyone can make a difference, in small or big ways and I know that in 10 years I will be reading about the great things you girls are doing, and the positive changes you are making.”

It is certainly evident that the students are left feeling even more inspired, and we are all looking forward to seeing the next steps on students’ paths to breaking moulds!
