Our Computer Science curriculum has been carefully designed as a spiral learning journey from Year 7 through to Sixth Form, enabling students to revisit, deepen and apply their knowledge, understanding and skills as they progress through the school. Inspired by the future direction of Computing education and the evolving digital world, our curriculum extends beyond traditional Computer Science to include Artificial Intelligence, Digital Literacy, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Robotics and Emerging Technologies.
Every academic year begins with Digital Literacy, Artificial Intelligence and Online Safety, ensuring our students first develop the knowledge and judgement to become safe, ethical and responsible digital citizens before building increasingly sophisticated technical expertise.
We want every girl to recognise that Computer Science is not simply about programming computers. It is about solving problems, asking questions, thinking creatively, working collaboratively and using technology to improve lives.
Through practical learning, national competitions, university partnerships and industry collaborations, students experience Computing as an exciting, creative and highly relevant discipline that opens doors to careers across every sector.

Key Stage 3

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum introduces girls to the exciting possibilities of Computing through a carefully sequenced spiral curriculum. Every year begins by revisiting Digital Literacy, Artificial Intelligence and Online Safety before progressively developing programming, computational thinking, cybersecurity and data science through increasingly challenging and creative experiences.
Students revisit concepts each year with greater depth, ensuring knowledge becomes secure whilst confidence continues to grow. Learning is practical, collaborative and rooted in authentic contexts, allowing girls to see themselves as future innovators, engineers, scientists and technology leaders.

Key Stage 4
Specialise
Building upon the strong foundations established throughout Key Stage 3, students specialise in OCR GCSE Computer Science whilst continuing to develop the wider digital knowledge and future ready skills that distinguish Northwood College students.
Programming, algorithms, computer systems and cybersecurity are revisited with increasing sophistication, whilst Artificial Intelligence, Digital Literacy and responsible innovation continue to be embedded across the curriculum. Students are encouraged to think beyond examination specifications, considering how technology can solve real-world problems and improve society.

Our Sixth Form curriculum provides exceptional opportunities for young women who aspire to become future leaders in technology. Alongside A Level Computer Science, students benefit from a unique programme of university partnerships, industry collaborations and the prestigious GDST Space Technology Diploma, enabling them to experience Computing far beyond the classroom.
Students deepen their expertise in algorithms, software development, Artificial Intelligence, computational thinking and computer systems whilst completing an independent programming project that demonstrates creativity, innovation and technical excellence.
A defining feature of our Sixth Form provision is the GDST Space Technology Diploma, an exclusive pre-university programme designed to inspire the next generation of female innovators within the rapidly growing space sector.
Working alongside leading universities and industry partners, including organisations such as Space Store Oxford, Cranfield University, Sen Corporation Ltd, Viasat GLobal Communications, students explore Python programming, Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, satellite communications, data analytics, computer vision and autonomous technologies through authentic engineering challenges. They attend specialist workshops, industry visits and conferences, collaborate with engineers and researchers, and present their work to senior professionals, developing the confidence and communication skills expected of future STEM leaders.
The diploma enables students to experience how Computer Science underpins the future of space exploration, environmental monitoring, climate science and global communications, whilst developing highly transferable skills in leadership, project management, teamwork and innovation.
Many students progress to university courses and careers in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Medicine, Business and Finance, recognising that computational thinking is now a discipline that underpins almost every profession.
