Ancient Greek

Each year we offer Ancient Greek lessons to Year 9 (or high attaining Year 8s) as an after school enrichment class, which leads to a half-GCSE equivalent qualification.

The Intermediate Certificate in Classical Greek (ICCG) is a new qualification which aims to introduce students to the ancient language and acquire a qualification worth approximately 50% of a GCSE. Students who have enjoyed studying Latin will relish the challenge of tackling another ancient language with a different alphabet. The qualification is recognised by UCAS and endorsed by many leading Russell Group Universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

The course will cover approximately 50% of the grammar and vocabulary required for the full Classical Greek GCSE, and there may be an opportunity to complete the qualification after the initial two-year course. The ICCG course will run weekly across two years, with the aim for students to sit the examination in Summer 2026 (end of Year 9). As this is an additional qualification, students will be expected to attend each session and complete weekly homework tasks, including vocabulary/grammar learning and written translations. Resources and materials will be shared via Google Classroom.
