Year 7 visit France for the Day

Not even the very early start could dampen the excitement of the Year 7’s as we all boarded the double-decker coach on Friday 5 July. Destination: la France!

We arrived safely at the charming and quaint little French town of Guînes, some 30km kilometres from the Eurotunnel terminal. Here we enjoyed a colourful French market. From fresh strawberries and beautiful artichokes to dresses and caps, there was something for everyone. The girls practised their French with the stallholders and the market goers, conducting a survey about their hobbies and family life (I couldn’t resist telling them that we had brought over the beautiful weather from England!). This was all very thirsty work, which was rewarded with a trip to a French café for nice cold ‘boisson’, which the girls ordered themselves in their best French. Whilst enjoying their drink, they wrote a postcard in French.

After a picnic lunch, we headed straight for a bakery visit. Here we were given an interactive tour of a typical French bakery. We were shown exactly how bread is made using only four ingredients (flour, yeast, water and salt); we were then invited to make some croissants – an experience I think the girls will not forget easily!

After an essential trip to a French hypermarket, it was already time to say ‘au revoir’.

I’m sure that the taste of France was still present even on Saturday morning as we were all given some delicious croissants and pains au chocolat to take home.

The girls are to be commended for their exemplary behaviour and should be very proud of themselves. Bravo!
