Year 12 Excite Programme -Talk on Medicine
In June we welcomed Dr Williams, a paediatric neurologist, to talk to the Year 12 girls as part of the Excite programme. Dr Williams started her talk by going through the step by step process of making a medical diagnosis, for the rare condition called glucose transporter deficiency syndrome. Dr Williams explained the importance of taking the patient’s medical history, drawing up a list of possible diagnoses and then performing the various medical investigations.
Dr Williams who has also had experience of being on a medical school interview panel explained the importance of the following when applying for Medicine:
The best predicted A Level grades
A high UKCAT score
Personal Statement
- Able to demonstrate that you have positively decided on a career in medicine
- Able to demonstrate you are committed to working for the benefit of society/the community
Good communication skills and able to work within a team

What else have you got to offer?
What strategies have you got to help you make it through the course and as a career doctor?
Many thanks to Dr Williams for coming into school to give such an interesting and informative talk.
