Year 1 Shelter Building

As part of our Science curriculum, Year One have been working on the properties of materials. The girls really loved working in a team to build a waterproof shelter to keep a toy rabbit or cat dry. The preparation was done as an Outdoor Learning homework, with the children collecting a handful of sticks with which to build the shelter,  at school. They were absolutely jubilant when they tested their shelters, by pouring water from a watering can onto them, and checking to see if the toys were dry. They were able to say why it had been a success and what they would do next time to make it even better. Great work girls!

It was so much fun with collaborative working, using technical skills and knowledge of the properties of materials to construct the shelter.

Next week we escape from an island and make a wooden raft. (Well our brave toy dog does!)
