World Book Day 2023

The school was buzzing with a range of ‘bookish’ events for this year’s World Book Day on 2 March 2023, including our annual House Book Quiz.
This involved teams representing each of the four Houses and made up of quizzers from years 7 to 13.  Students were put through their paces and invited to answer a range of questions about famous people who love reading, identifying pixelated book covers and quotes from famous children’s and YA books, such as: “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” (Harry Potter!).

We then moved on to the quick buzzer round, inviting the audience to join in when the teams didn’t know the answers.  This round included questions on classic books such as, ‘What is the name of Bill Syke’s dog in Dickens’ ‘Oliver Twist’ (Bull’s-eye) to the modern classic, ‘Which district is Katniss from in Suzanne Collins ‘Hunger Games’’ (District 13).  The overall winning House team will be announced at the end of term assembly, when they will be awarded the new House Book Quiz ‘Awards Cup’, kindly donated by ex-student Jeannette Curran.

We also held a famous book character scavenger hunt in the senior library for World Book Day to focus on the many great characters that students in the junior school had dressed up as.  Following on from the popularity of this scavenger hunt, students were challenged to find photos of inspiring women around the library for ‘International Women’s Day’, which in turn helped them answer the accompanying quiz questions, such as, ‘Who was the first female pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean’ (Amelia Earhart) and ‘How many Grand Slams has Serena Williams won?’ (23!).
