The Mission Zero Challenge

We are delighted to celebrate Kaveesha’s fantastic achievement in successfully completing the Mission Zero challenge, an international educational initiative that gives young people the unique opportunity to write code that is run aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

After successfully meeting all of the challenge criteria, Kaveesha’s program was executed on the ISS in May 2026. She has now received her official Mission Zero certificate, which records the exact location of the International Space Station at the moment her code was run in space, making this an incredible and memorable accomplishment.

Throughout the project, Kaveesha developed a range of valuable Computer Science skills, including computational thinking, problem solving, programming, debugging and logical reasoning. She learned how software can interact with sensors to collect and display environmental data, while gaining an understanding of how coding is used to support astronauts living and working aboard the International Space Station.

Mission Zero offers’ students a truly authentic experience of applying technology in a real world setting beyond our planet. By writing code that runs in space, students gain an appreciation of how Computer Science plays a vital role in space exploration, scientific research and engineering.

Kaveesha’s achievement is a wonderful example of how curiosity, creativity and perseverance can open the door to exciting opportunities in STEM and inspire the next generation of women in technology and space science.
