Science Experiment

Year One have been devising an experiment to show that waves are made when wind blows on water. Being able to create a test to prove a hypothesis is part of the Science Curriculum for Key Stage One.

We had noticed that water is still if there is no wind (as in the pool) and if there is wind, it moves (noted at the school pond).

The girls discussed various ways to make wind : use an electric fan (soon discounted on safety grounds!), make some paper fans, blow on the water and use straws to blow or just let nature move the water to make a wave.

It was great fun making the ‘sea’ by filling up a crate outside in the garden .  The girls tried many ideas involving paper fans, using straws to blow, blowing through their lips and just seeing if the wind could make a wave, agitating the water with their hands and tipping the containers up and down.

This led to many questions such as who makes the wind?

What is wind? And why is there wind?

So many great questions and ideas were generated by exploring this topic in a lovely hour spent outside.

Great thinking Year One.
