On Wednesday 29 November, we were honoured and privileged to welcome, Steve, a Senior Language Analyst, at GCHQ.

Around 25 eager Year 9 pupils from Northwood College, Merchant Taylors’ and Northwood High School were given a taster session in Arabic. From teaching them basic phrases to giving them some insights into the Arabic-speaking world, Steve made sure that by the end of the session they were all able to greet one another in Arabic.

After lunch, Steve gave a riveting talk about the role of GCHQ and how it works hard on a daily basis to keep us all safe from those who seek to harm us. Steve explained how he uses his language skills to interpret and translate thousands of documents to support vital operations. Clearly, Languages and those with linguistic ability are of paramount importance in the fight against terrorism. So what are you waiting for? Brush up on your languages and perhaps one day you could work for GCHQ and help keep us all safe, and prevent terrorism and other serious crime.
