We organised an amazing, fun packed STEM day on Friday 9th June.
The Royal Society of Chemistry and Biochemical Society came into Northwood College for Girls, to inspire and inform the girls with fascinating talks. This was then followed by a talk and a workshop on chemistry of nail varnish, from Dr Jessica Wade, Department of Physics and Centre for Plastic Electronics and WISE Young Women’s Board and also Mikkaila McKeever-Willis, chemistry PhD student at Imperial College.
The format of the afternoon was a “wikithon", where, working with a Wikimedian, students searched archived journals, books and science magazines and uploaded the stories of women onto Wikipedia. The students worked in groups and learnt about the principles of Wikipedia and how it works. Towards the end of the day, they were all given an opportunity to create wikipedia pages themselves!
